REPORT: Internet growth generates journalism start-ups in India

There are more new and interesting experiments in Indian journalism than in most other countries, write Arijit Sen and Rasmus Kleis Nielsen. India has also the fastest levels of internet growth in the world and there is masses of new digital journalism start-ups pursuing the opportunities offered by this.

Sen and Kleis Nielsen analysed six examples of digital journalism start-ups for Indian media environment to show of how Indian journalists, technologists, and entrepreneurs are working to develop different models for doing journalism in India.

Interview based report shows that the rapid growth in internet use and digital advertising has been accompanied by a large number of new start-ups. According to the report these businesses are developing distinct content and mobile-first and social-first approaches to distribution, and facing competition from both legacy media and technology companies when it comes to building a sustainable business.
