Journalistic organisations that live in exile from, or under a repressive regime struggle to make ends meet, writes Clare Cook, of University of Central Lancashire. The author interviewed a total of 36 journalists, financiers and media business experts.
According to Cook, the researched organisations were not financially viable, and they mostly relied on grants to finance their operations. Various attempts to diversify revenue sources are being made, but so far they have been usuccesful. Regardless, many of the interviewees have a positive outlook toward their organisations’ survivability, Cook notes.
