CFP: Explaining the ‘deviance’ of Central and Eastern European media

A special issue of the journal Media and Communication on Central and Eastern European (CEE) media systems is looking for contributions. The issue is titled “Turbulences of the Central and Eastern European Media: Perspectives of the Past, Present and Future”. It’s guest edited by Epp Lauk, of University of Jyväskylä, in lieu of Bradley Greenberg, of Michigan State University, and Elisabeth Klaus, of University of Salzburg.

The premise of the issue is, that despite often being found ‘deviant’ in comparison to Western ideal models, post-communist CEE media systems are not failures. Instead, they’re at a different, path-dependent stage of an ongoing development. The question the upcoming issue intends to ask and answer is: What factors have guided and continue to guide the evolution of CEE media systems and journalistic cultures to their current states – and beyond?

Further information of the call is available online here.

Epp Lauk is the head of the department of Communication in University of Jyväskylä, which hosts the Journalism Research News -project.
