In their newly published study Tony Harcup and Deirdre O’Neill examine news values within mainstream journalism and considers to what extent news values may have changed since their earlier 2001 updating of Galtung and Ruge‘s 1965 taxonomy of news values.
The article suggests an updated set of contemporary news values and note that who is selecting news, for whom, in what medium and by what means, may be as important as whatever news values. New values are for example audio-visuals and shareability.
