In their new article Brett Hutchins, of Monash University and Raymond Boyle, of University of Glasgow, employed Barbie Zelizer’s concept of “community of practice” to emphasise the existence and significance of shared practices within the profession of sport journalism.

The study is based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with journalists, editors, news presenters and commentators in different news organisations in Australia and Scotland. The authors analyses the consequences of technological transformation, industry conditions, and audience formations in the context of contemporary news media and journalism.

The results show that sport journalists seem to be under pressure because of reinforcing changes in media technologies, journalistic routines and institutional relations.

The article “A Community of Practice Sport journalism: mobile media and institutional change” was published online by Digital Journalism. It is available here.
