Spanish media does not engage in proper, national debate over crucial food security issues, write Dionisio Ortiz-Miranda, Olga Moreno Pérez, and Eladio Arnalte Alegre, all of Technical University of Madrid. They analysed news stories published online by Spanish newspapers, and blog posts related to food security issues.

The authors identified eight frames through which food security issues were depicted. The broad spread of frames demonstrates the fractured nature of the public discussion.

Furthermore, frames that underline the local and temporal nature of the problems are especially prevalent, the authors found. Such frames often focus on the effects of the economic crisis, assuming food security problems will be resolved along with financial ones.
