A quarter of online users say social media is their main source of news in some parts of the Asia-Pacific region, shows the new Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2016: Asia-Pacific Supplementary Report. It is written by Kruakae Pothong and Rasmus Kleis Nielsen. The report presents an analysis of news and media use in a range of markets in the Asia-Pacific region.

The report is based on a survey of online news users and it combines data from the RISJ Digital News Report and an additional pilot study conducted in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Malaysia. The report also reveals that several markets in the Asia-Pasific region are significantly more technologically developed than their European and North American counterparts when it comes to the importance of digital news.
