Few picks from the ECREA2018 conference

It is again time for Europe’s biggest conference for communication scholars, ECREA. Held this year in Lugano, Switzerland, the conference offers 29 sessions on Journalism Studies, not to mention various other divisions dealing with media and journalism. Theme of the four-day event is “Centres and Peripheries: Communication, Research, Translation”. We gathered few picks from the programme.

Thursday, 1 November

Session JOS01 “Data journalism: Studying a maturing field” explores the role of networks and collaboration, the datafication of society and civic technology. 09:00 – 10:30 at Palazzo Congressi Room B3

Session CDE06 “Journalism at critical moments” goes into weighty topics such as Brexit, classified information and human trafficking. 14:30 – 16:00 at Villa Ciani Room 215

Session JOS11 “News on social media platforms” portrays comparative analyses related to social media from different countries and looks at personalization of news. 16:30 – 18:00 at Palazzo Congressi Room C1

Friday, 2 November

Session JOS14 “Engaging news audiences in new ways” includes presentations on passion, virtual reality, longforms and other topics related to engagement and audience participation. 11:00 – 12:30 Palazzo Congressi Room C1

Session JOS16 “Journalism in times of economic uncertainty: Profession under pressure” dives into gender, Bourdieu and the changing norms of the journalism profession. 14:30 – 16:00 Palazzo Congressi Room C1

Session JOS19 “Media business: New strategies and their consequences” is about economic sustainability, power, paywalls and ownership. 18:00 – 19:30 Palazzo Congressi Room C1

Saturday, 3 November

Session GEC07 “Inside the newsroom: Researching gender and journalism” analyses journalistic work from the perspective of gender. Presentations cover stereotyping, self-conceptions and online abuse. 11:00 – 12:30 at Liceo 1 Room 3

Session JOS26 “Understanding and helping news audiences” focuses on audience perceptions: what is news, why do people avoid news, and how people assess them. 11:00 – 12:30 Palazzo Congressi Room C2+C3
