Study shows that reader comments can have a systematic influence on online journalism. The comment function can lead to not only positive effects, such as traffic on online platforms, but also negative effects. Contributions of other users can influence the perceived journalistic quality of an article in a negative way and thus lower the recipients’ “trust” in a specific online medium. That is why online newspapers may want to concider about separating news forums and controversial discussions from news articles.
