Are so-called soft news detrimental to journalism or even to society at whole? This is the question that a recently published article sets out to answer. The article was published in Communication Research, and was written by Mark Boukes and Hajo G. Boomgaarde of University of Amsterdam.
Boukes and Boomgaarde investigate how soft and hard news relate to cynicism about politics among Dutch citizens. Using non-parametric uni-dimensional unfolding, they analyse three public opinion surveys that all suggest that people who watched more soft news were more cynical about politics than people who watched more hard news.
This relationship was not conditional on individuals’ level of political knowledge and interest, Boukes and Boomgarde note.
