The plurality of viewpoints in news is important to its function, and the state of said plurality should be carefully investigated, argue Christian Baden, of Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Nina Springer, of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. They explore the theoretical foundations of viewpoint diversity, and end up proposing a method to measure it.
The authors recognize three qualities as relevant to viewpoint diversity: the number of viewpoints, viewpoint variability, and viewpoint distinctness.
The article Conceptualizing viewpoint diversity in news discourse was published as an online first article of the journal Journalism. It is available online (abstract free).
